Drag Race UK’s Choriza May has called for wider representation on the next series of the franchise, specifically calling for Drag Kings to be included.

Chatting to hosts Bobby Norris & Stephen Leng on Access All Areas, the recent contestant on the third series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK gave her two cents on what she hopes to see next series: I would like to see some Drag Kings in there. 100%. I think it’s about time”.

Following raving success in the US, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK first graced our screens in October 2019. Choriza, the first Spanish queen on the UK series, has praised the British version for being “more forward than other seasons”, but stated that “Drag Race should be a reflection of what the scenes are in their countries and it doesn’t feel like that at the moment without Drag Kings”.

She added: “I go out in Newcastle and we have some amazing Drag Kings that perform the cabarets. I would love the world to see that on Drag Race as well.”

Having watched her fair share of drag competitions across the globe, Choriza raved about the Mexican competition, La Más Draga, for being so inclusive: ‘They just cast any drag performer there and you really get a good taste of what the drag is in the country. I wish Drag Race UK also did this for future seasons.”

Despite casting Victoria Scone – the first ever cis-gender female drag artist contestant – on the latest series of Drag Race UK, Choriza still thinks more can be done for fair representation: “Just having Victoria there felt closer to home. It felt closer to what UK drag is. If we had Drag Kings that would just be spot on.”

“Victoria has proved that all the competition is really about is talent and doing drag. So as long as we have both, go ahead, win the crown!”

In October, BBC Three announced that casting for the next series of Drag Race UK is open and calling all UK Queens to apply… The question is, will we be seeing some Kings in there too?
